Consider…
Rock formations, like The Rock that formed them, can be known, explored, and enjoyed. They can provide shelter in a storm and shade in the heat. They can also provide a firm, unshakable foundation on which to build. But what sets the Rock of our salvation (Psa. 95:1) apart from rock formations, is the personal, intimate way in which we not only know Him but that He knows us. In Christ, He is to us the immovable, unchanging, eternal Rock AND the gracious, loving, merciful, faithful Father in heaven.
Pray…
Father, You are the Rock of ages, Your work is perfect, for all Your ways are justice. A God of faithfulness and without iniquity, just and upright are You. There is none holy like the Lord: for there is none besides You; there is no rock like our God. Because everyone who hears the words of the Lord and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock, cause me to incline my ear always to you, so when the rain falls, and the floods come, and the winds blow and beat on that house, it will not fall, because it has been founded on the rock. (Deut. 32:4, 1 Sam. 2:2, Mat. 7:24-25)
Too comfortable?
This is another image of Kenny “conquering” the rock, or at least the ascent to the top. To get to the place where he could do this, he prepared, exercised, travelled, sacrificed time and money, and sought the advice of others that had gone before him. In contrast, we are “more than conquerors”, not on the rock but in the Rock! But similarly, the more we are willing to sacrifice in order to know and experience God, the more we will enjoy the view from the top, as He brings us up from the pit and sets our feet on the rock (Psa. 40:2).
