The craving for significance manifests itself in widely diverse ways, from philanthropy and humanitarianism to death-defying stunts, or, in the most depraved examples, heinous crimes. Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr. noted, “Nothing is so common-place as to wish to be remarkable.” Harry S. Truman said, “Men often mistake notoriety for fame, and would rather be remarked for their vices and follies than not be noticed at all!” Because our existence, whether in the limelight or obscurity, is not limited to three score and ten or twenty (Psa. 90:10), we would do well to embrace this truth from John Piper: “Deeper than knowing God is being known by God. What defines us as Christians is not most profoundly that we have come to know Him but that He took note of us and made us His own.” Are you His own?

Father in heaven,
Because You knew me before I was born and made me in Your image (Jer. 1:5, Gen. 1:27), constantly remind me of my worth and significance in Your eyes (Eph. 2:10, Psa. 8:5). Compel me to delight in You (Psa. 37:4) and not in human applause (John 12:43), knowing that I cannot both please man and serve Christ (Gal. 1:10). Ultimately, it is before You that I will stand and give account (2 Cor. 5:10), so help me to offer myself to You as a living sacrifice (Rom. 12:1).
In the name of Jesus, Amen.
